A man was recently taken into custody in New York after reportedly causing a fatal car accident due to drunk driving. The alleged DUI collision involved five automobiles. In addition to killing a man, the accident resulted in injuries to a woman.
The accident took place at a little before 3 a.m. on a Sunday. According to authorities, the collision started when the automobile of a man, 54, T-boned another motor vehicle. The car that was struck ended up spinning out of control before striking yet another car. The man who caused the accident also allegedly proceeded to strike two parked motor vehicles as well.
The 31-year-old driver of the T-boned car died in the collision. Meanwhile, his passenger, 28, suffered injuries but was expected to live. The 48-year-old individual driving the third car also suffered injuries and was taken to the hospital. The man who reportedly caused the crash faces charges of impaired driving and driving under the influence.
Facing a DUI charge in New York can understandably be intimidating, especially if the charge is in connection with a fatal motor vehicle collision. After all, a DUI conviction in this situation will result in time behind bars and may make it difficult to land a job in the future due to a criminal record. However, those facing such charges have the right to vigorously fight them at trial. Alternatively, they may seek to negotiate plea deals with the prosecution, as this may result in lighter charges and thus more lenient sentences than what they would receive at trial if found guilty.
