What do you wear to court?

On Behalf of | Mar 28, 2019 | Criminal Defense |

Appearances matter in court. As someone who is facing criminal charges, this needs to be made clear to you. If you walk into court in an orange jumpsuit and in chains, there’s going to be an automatic bias in the jury or by others. That’s not fair, but it’s the way that society works.

Your attorney should make it clear that the way you dress in your initial appearances can help your case. That doesn’t mean you have to run out and buy the most expensive suit or the trendiest professional attire. What it does mean is that you need to look clean, put together and appropriate.

What should you wear to court?

Starting with clothing, it’s a goal to wear business clothing. A suit jacket and slacks for men and a dress, skirt, or slacks and a blouse for women is always appropriate. For shoes, don’t wear anything open. Closed heels that are shorter are often called “court heels,” and are appropriate for women. Men should attempt to wear dress shoes. If you’re in doubt about your outfit, bring it to your attorney to make sure it’s suitable for court.

How should you address your hair?

There is no hard and fast rule for hair other than to make sure you appear well-groomed. If you have long hair, make sure it’s brushed and styled. The same for short hair, and make sure it’s trimmed shortly before court. You want to look as clean and well-groomed as possible when you appear. Don’t wear a hat unless you have religious reasons to do so.

These are a few tips to help you look more professional in court and to boost the likelihood of success in your case.
