Prescription drugs that can lead to legal problems

On Behalf of | Jun 5, 2018 | Drug Charges |

Habits are said to be easily formed but difficult to break. This is especially true where prescription drugs are concerned. While there are many valid reasons why someone in New York or elsewhere would take a prescribed medication, several types of prescription drugs often lead to serious addiction, often accompanied by legal problems that may have far-reaching consequences.

Many people suffer from chronic pain conditions that leave them temporarily or permanently disabled. Those who lose their abilities to carry out daily functions often also lose their jobs, thus leading to financial crises in addition health-related stress. To alleviate pain, many doctors prescribe opioid drugs, such as Oxycodone.

Doctors also recommend drugs, such as Xanax or Adderall for people suffering anxiety disorders or narcolepsy. The bottom line is that many prescription drugs treat symptoms and help improve people’s conditions by making them feel better. The trouble is that some people wind up feeling so good, their bodies begin to crave the drugs, thus leading to substance abuse problems.

Any person accused of using, selling or buying prescription drugs outside legally permitted parameters may wind up facing criminal charges in court. Such charges often stem from statements or supposed evidence produced by police officers, leaving the accused in a ‘my-word-against-yours’ type of confrontation. Most New York residents facing drug charges regarding suspected prescription medication abuse turn to experienced defense attorneys for legal support. Regardless of the accusations, the burden of proving criminal charges rests with government prosecutors, who must provide compelling evidence in court that is found to be beyond a reasonable doubt.
