Practical tips for avoiding DUI in New York

Summertime is just around the bend and for many residents in New York and other states, that includes plans for beach trips, graduation parties and other social gatherings. Many such events are likely to include alcoholic beverages, which for some, pose a risk for DUI arrest. There are several ways to avoid such problems, however, and also steps to take to try to minimize one’s circumstances if drunk driving charges are indeed filed at some point.

To avoid drunk driving altogether, many motorists choose to leave their own vehicle keys at home when they plan on consuming alcohol. Some bring along a designated driver, who agrees to abstain from alcohol and act as chauffeur for the occasion. This automatically eliminates the possibility of facing a DUI arrest, since the person drinking won’t be behind the wheel.

It sometimes happens that a person may drive to a particular gathering, then later determine he or she had too much to drink to safely or legally operate a motor vehicle. Others who have been in similar situations in the past have telephoned taxi cab services to arrange transportation back home. Nowadays there are several types of ride service companies available, and transportation can be secured by completing a request online.

If a person attends a summertime party in New York and has a beer or two, it does not necessarily mean he or she is breaking the law by later driving a car. Anyone who  believes DUI charges have been filed without warrant  may request a case dismissal. An experienced criminal law attorney can help protect a motorist’s rights in any circumstances where formal charges have been filed.
