Mahopac couple accused of illegal drug possession

On Behalf of | Jun 20, 2018 | Drug Charges |

A 36-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman who share a home in Mahopac recently landed in jail after New York narcotics officers paid them a visit. The couple have a son who is less than a year old. The child was reportedly inside the home when the Putnam County Sheriff’s department dispatched officers to the scene to conduct a search. The incident didn’t end so well for the child’s parents, who now face illegal drug possession charges as well as several other offenses.

The situation seems to have only made matters worse for the toddler’s father, who apparently is on supervised probation in relation to a past criminal conviction for federal charges of conspiracy to distribute cocaine. That conviction was handed down in 2004. The law enforcement agents who recently searched the man’s home claim to have seized more than two pounds of marijuana.

Authorities also say a pistol, scales and substantial amounts of cash was taken into police custody during the search. The man was remanded to a county jail in lieu of $50,000 bail bond or cash bail. The woman was ultimately released when she posted the bond set in her case. While the parents were detained, the child was placed in the custody of a relative.

Not only is the couple charged with illegal drug possession, they are also facing charges of child endangerment. Penalties under conviction may include lengthy jail sentences and fines between $1,000 and $5,000. A New York criminal attorney can assist anyone currently facing similar charges to determine what may be the best course of action to try to avoid conviction.
