Memorial Day weekend DWI warnings

On Behalf of | May 16, 2018 | DWI |

For many in New York, Memorial Day weekend represents the gateway to summer. It is an unofficial summer holiday that represents time with family, barbeques in parks, camping trips or even trips to the coast. It also is the first major travel holiday of the summer driving season.

AAA predicts that more than 36 million people will travel at least 50 miles to a destination this weekend. While many people will fly to their destination, a large portion will drive. Because of this, law enforcement agencies throughout New York State will be on high alert for drunk drivers. There is a strong incentive for police to seek out drunk drivers.

The Memorial Day weekend holiday is one of the deadliest times of the year for alcohol related accidents. With more people on streets and highways than usual, the chances of a driver being in an accident increases.

As such, law enforcement agencies are under a particular amount of pressure to prevent tragic accidents, especially since alcohol related accidents tend to lead to deaths. Also, tragic accidents during holiday weekends garner a wider amount of attention and thus more scrutiny. Because of this, it is expected that authorities will take no chances. Additional patrols should be expected, and sobriety checkpoints are certainly not out of the question.

If you are stopped (and subsequently arrested) on suspicion of DWI, you are entitled to a number of defenses. An experienced drunk driving defense attorney can help you understand your options and protect yourself.
