Are you facing drug charges over prescription medication?

On Behalf of | May 30, 2018 | Drug Charges |

Many people in New York and throughout the nation are currently living with negative side effects from moderate to severe injuries or illnesses. Symptoms often include chronic pain and discomfort. Doctors often prescribe medication to help alleviate pain and discomfort; however, in some situations, those taking prescription medications become addicted and wind up facing drug charges.

An opiate-based pain reliever that is said to create feelings of euphoria but is also highly addictive is Vicodin. If a doctor prescribes this drug, it is typically to be taken in pill form. Those who are addicted to the drug sometimes crush the pills, then snort the drug or inject it into their veins.

OxyContin is another strong narcotic that reportedly does a great job when the goal is to alleviate pain. This drug is often prescribed following surgery or to help someone recovering from a serious injury, as often suffered in motor vehicles collisions or other blunt force trauma incidents. Sadly, many people have died from overdosing on this drug.

Other opioids, stimulants or depressants used to treat various adverse health conditions are also highly addictive. If a New York police officer makes a traffic stop and notices an empty prescription drug vial on the floor of a person’s vehicle or searches someone and finds several pills in his or her pocket, that person may later face drug charges if an arrest is made. Some cases never make it to trial due to lack of evidence or personal rights violations. An experienced defense attorney knows how to determine which defense strategy may work best in trying to avoid conviction.
