On Behalf of | Dec 27, 2016 | Drug Charges

A former New York high school athlete was arrested on Dec. 18, along with the driver of the car in which he was a passenger. Police stopped the vehicle at around 6 p.m. that Saturday, and a search of the car is said to have turned up a variety of illegal substances. Both men are now facing drug charges.

The car, driven by a 24-year-old Schenectady man, was carrying the 25-year-old former Bishop Maginn basketball star while heading west on Route 7 when it was stopped by New York State Police troopers. According to a report, an officer smelled marijuana, which resulted in a search of the vehicle. Purportedly, approximately 1.9 grams of cocaine and several baggies of marijuana were discovered, along with other narcotics items.

After arrest, both of the accused men were arraigned and sent to the county jail in Rensselaer, where they were each being held on $2,500 bail. The former athlete is facing charges of second-degree criminal use of drug paraphernalia as well as two counts of fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. The driver has been charged with two counts of fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of marijuana, second-degree criminal use of drug paraphernalia, DWAI-drugs and second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation.

Any residents of Putnam County and the surrounding New York communities who find themselves facing drug charges would benefit from contacting an attorney with experience in similar cases. Drug possession is a serious criminal charge that can have major repercussions on the life of the accused. A defendant facing such accusations typically benefits by securing the assistance of a lawyer who will fight vigorously on his or her behalf to protect all applicable legal rights.
