Hip hop artist arrested in New York for DUI

On Behalf of | Oct 3, 2013 | DWI |

At around 2 a.m. on Oct. 2, Hip hop artist Jim Jones was stopped on a New York highway for allegedly speeding. Police say that when they made contact with the rapper, he appeared to be impaired. He was taken into custody on suspicion of DUI.

Police believe that Jones was under the influence of some kind of drug at the time of his arrest. Police administered field sobriety tests at the scene that Jones supposedly failed. When he was taken to the police station, officers attempted to take a breath test from the rapper, but he refused. It is suspected that the drug Jones had consumed that night in New York was marijuana.

This isn’t the first time Jim Jones has been in trouble with the law. In February of this year, he was arrested close to his home in New Jersey for obstruction and disorderly conduct regarding two warrants for his arrest. In Feb. 2012, he was taken into custody because he was driving while his license was suspended. In addition, he was arrested in Las Vegas for allegedly assaulting a police officer in a brawl.

However, his prior contact with law enforcement should have no bearing on the DUI charge he is currently facing. Since Jones refused to take a breath test, the evidence against him will come down to the observations of the officers. It will first be necessary for officers to substantiate the traffic stop. Then, they will have to prove that the field sobriety tests were properly administered. If authorities are unable prove that the officers did everything right and were correct in their actions beyond a reasonable doubt, it may be possible for the charges to be dismissed.
