Teens, avoid shopping with friends who steal

On Behalf of | Oct 23, 2020 | Criminal Defense |

Imagine going shopping with a friend. You might know that they have a history of shoplifting, but you wouldn’t think that would affect you personally. Unfortunately, if they get caught and you’re with them, then you could be accused of participating in that theft as well.

Here’s an example, if your friend takes an item while you’re talking to one of the workers in the store, you could be accused of distracting them while your friend steals. Even if that’s not the case, the store owner would have good reason to believe so.

When shoplifting happens and someone gets caught, they could be accused of a crime and potentially be charged. Depending on your age, the store owner might go easy on you, but if they want to press charges, it’s likely that they will.

Even though you were not the one who stole something, if you’re with someone who did, you could face repercussions as well. If they hide an item in your handbag or backpack, you could end up facing harsh penalties, too.

For these reasons, it’s a good idea not to go shopping with people who steal. It’s a risk to you and could end up getting you in trouble.

What happens if you are charged for shoplifting?

If you are charged, it’s a good idea not to say anything to the police that might make it seem like you knew your friend was going to steal. Stay quiet, and be sure to look into your legal options to protect yourself. The right help could assist you in having the charges reduced or dropped completely.
