Are you at risk of succumbing to road rage?

On Behalf of | Aug 6, 2020 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

Many people in New York and elsewhere have short tempers. You may be one of those people, and even though you try your best to keep your temper in check, certain things just seem to set you off. In particular, if you are on the road and another driver seems to be driving too slow or otherwise affecting your commute in a negative way, you may easily become aggravated.

You may not necessarily consider yourself an aggressive driver, but you could fall into that category without realizing it. Unfortunately, if others could see your driving behavior as reckless or aggressive, you could end up in trouble with law enforcement.

Are you at risk of a ticket or even charges?

It is important that drivers are self-aware and know how their driving can come across to other people. If you participate in any of the following actions while on the road, you may be more of an aggressive driver than you thought:

  • Driving well over the speed limit
  • Tailgating drivers in front of you
  • Trying to beat red lights by speeding up or skirting through yellow lights
  • Flashing your headlights at a driver you believe is driving too slow
  • Yelling at other drivers
  • Making obscene gestures
  • Excessively using your car horn

While you may think that these actions are relatively harmless, they could land you in serious trouble, especially if your aggravation turns into a bout of road rage. If you get the urge to cut off another driver, tailgate or speed up, remember that those actions could easily cause a serious car accident. If an accident does occur, you could end up causing injuries to another person, and serious criminal charges could result.

Charges for reckless or aggressive driving

Even if an accident does not take place, it is still possible for officers to stop your vehicle and charge you with reckless driving if they believe you are putting yourself or other travelers at risk. You undoubtedly do not want to end up in this situation, but if it does happen, you may want to remember that you have legal options. You could combat such allegations by creating and presenting a meaningful defense.

It may be wise for you to work with a legal professional for this type of endeavor. An experienced defense attorney could help you understand your most viable routes for fighting against criminal charges.
