Who’s most at risk of crashing in the summer?

On Behalf of | Jul 10, 2020 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

Did you know that the summer months are some of the most dangerous for drivers? Summer is known as the official holder of the “100 deadliest days,” in part because of the number of teen drivers on the roads.

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that teens are a vulnerable driver group. They are more likely to be involved in crashes based on data taken between Memorial Day and Labor Day over the course of five years between 2013 and 2017.

Did you know that alcohol plays a role in many teen collisions?

Even though drinking alcohol isn’t legal, around one in six teen drivers who are involved in crashes are found with alcohol in their systems.

Distractions are another big problem for teen drivers

Another major issue is how many distractions teen drivers face. Whether it’s texting, eating, talking on the phone or having passengers in the vehicle, distractions increase the likelihood of a crash. Over half of the teens surveyed stated that they had read emails or read a text while driving within the last 30 days. Around 40% stated that they had sent emails or texts.

It is clear that teen drivers are at risk, and they put others at risk as well. That’s why it’s so vital to make sure these drivers do get appropriate driving training and education. Parents are still the most likely people to help stop teen crashes, because they can sit down and express how dangerous it is to text and drive, speed, drink or be distracted. They can also impress the reality that a teen who causes a crash may face legal consequences.
