Why is speeding such a dangerous action?

On Behalf of | Apr 9, 2020 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

One of the most common causes of crashes in New York is speeding. Speeding is pretty common, and it would be rare to meet anyone who could say that they’ve never done it. Whether you’re late for a meeting or trying to rush to get to lunch with a friend, speeding is something that just happens.

It’s sad but true that those few minutes saved by speeding may end up taking a life or causing you or others to suffer from injuries. In 2018, 9,378 people died in speeding-related collisions. In 2017, it was reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that speeding played a role in 26% of all traffic deaths.

Why is speeding so dangerous?

Speeding is dangerous for a few reasons. These include:

  • A higher risk of crash severity and potentially more severe injuries
  • A greater chance of losing control of your vehicle
  • Lengthier stopping times, making it harder for you or another driver to stop when a hazard is present

Why do people speed?

People speed for many reasons. It’s a kind of aggressive driving behavior, but it can be caused by various factors like:

  • Running late for an event, work or a meeting
  • Feeling insulated and anonymous, which makes some motorists feel that their behavior doesn’t affect others
  • Disregard for the law
  • Traffic congestion that has delayed them

No matter what the reason for speeding is, the reality is that it’s extremely dangerous to drivers and those who they’re around. If you are struck by a speeding driver, it’s important that you look into your legal options and work to make sure the other party is held liable for their actions.
